I would really like to I would really love to open my own yarn shop and teach people to crochet and knit. I wonder if I actualy got good at spinning if I'd be able to sell my handspun yarn. But I couldn't do it all day every day. I would have to mix up some things and do watercolors one day, then spinning another, then beading and jewlery another day. You do have to be a bit creative to work in this field. Went by the lab today and talked to the instructor about moving on.

I have worked so hard at my clinicals and tests maybe I should go ahead and finish and be a part time cosmetologist just to pay the bills and discover everything Art has to offer me too. But how hard is it to make handspun yarn or handmade anything and get sells on etsy?

You're the ceo and the cfo and the marketing department and public relations and the person who takes out the trash. I spend more time in marketing my product than making it. Keep in mind your niche and how you'll promote to it. How much can you spend on promotion? How long can you maintain a shop without it paying for itself?

There's a range in handspun and I personally consider the subcategory of art yarn to be the most difficult to sell. On the other hand, if one's art yarn takes off, then it can itself be a huge selling point I'm thinking of the spinner who produces felted eyeball yarn.

It's getting seen that is the difficult part. Inactive Etsy Member I've just started making art yarn myself. I know I spend a lot more time promoting myself than I do making product: If i were you, i'd do the cosmetology thing, and work your business up until you are making enough at it to "quit your day job" I wish I had had the luxury. If I were you I would quit cosmetology unless you love it. It is not worth it to do it just for the money.

I was a hairdresser for years, because I absolutely loved it, and found it extremely rewarding, but I would never do any job just for the money. You need to be happy too.

You sound like you're just about to graduate and getting the gitters. Cosmotology may or may not be for you. It will cost you a lot of time and money to switch your focus from that to something else.

If you hate hair dressing this may be the appropriate decision, however you may want to lessen the financial impact by doing it for a year or two while you learn about the art of selling yarn. There's a huge learning curve in running your own business and having another job helps cushion the blow. Oh, this is such a difficult decision. The instructor is asking me what I'm going to do so she can drop me and move another student in.

She asked me to go ahead and get my stuff if I felt this wasn't for me and I should move on-and I couldn't do it. There are parts of cosmetology that I just love: But I have trouble being able to color someone's hair, or cut their hair.

It really sucks that my X partner wanted to do everything on me but would only let me shampoo her hair, that's it. She was too afriad I would screw up. I see these other students who really have alot of fun dyeing each other's hair.

But I also want this: I don't absolutely love doing hair and nails. I don't know if I absolutely love anything. Spinning can get boring. I can stand to do it every once in a while but not full time all day. I've got to have variety. I really haven't been into painting since the 80's. I have nothing to show for my artistic tallents. No paintings, no drawings, nothing.

So maybe I don't absolutely love fine arts either. I think I would love creating beautiful jewlery and going to shows to sell my wares. I would have to invest in alot of supplies that my X husband made me throw away he couldn't stand for me to have or do anything. It sounds like you have the jitters. It sounds good to say one is one's own boss and can "do anything", but the reality is that if one wants to sell enough to live off of, it takes a lot of work that is well outside the realm of "enjoyable".

My least favorite part is photographing my product and then editing the pictures for listing. But I can't list without it. The most baffling part is my taxes. But to be compliant, I have to do it.

The biggest gamble is advertising, but if I don't try I'll never know and advertising has been both the biggest boon and the biggest bust to my business.

Not all ad campaigns are created equal. You currently know your loves and limitations in cosmetology.

You have invested a lot of time, effort and money into it. Can you bear to stick with it as a buffer while you figure out if you can run a small business selling handspun and whatever else you choose to do? You have data on what you are considering leaving, but very little data on what you're considering beginning. You can do both at the same time. I'm really nervous about if I'm going to be good enough at cosmetology to actualy work at a salon.

Once you get at a salon you have to apprentice under someone and learn, realy learn how to cut hair and style it. I don't know if I can do that. My sister does well in this field but I have my doubts about it. I'm also mentaly handicapped and if my medicine stops working for me I'll end up back in the hospital. I don't know what will happen in a salon.

If they will rush me and demand I work faster than I can. This is what happened with my last job. They just rushed me, forced me to work faster at Goodwille. I would be working along then the manager would yell my name out right in the middle of me doing something or if I even stopped to think.

I am a slow person and I don't do well in a fast paced environment. I just don't know. I believe if I gave Art a good try I would be good at it. It's in my blood even though I've been too busy raising children to give it much time. Are you sure you want to stop following this person?
